Pre Introduction

Design Your Own Home Suite is a complete package that includes Architecture, Interiors, Landscape, Mighty Draw, and Design Estimator. Each program targets a specific area. Although the 3D view is not available in all programs, other features are included.

Architecture 3.01

Architecture is a nice program that will make exterior drawings and overview drawings. As you can see, the pictures help explain the two drawling types. Keep reading below to find out more on this program.

Much of the work that is required to make these drawings, you have to do. If you make an exterior scene, you have to draw the roof, sides, window, doors, etc. There are polygon tools, line tools, etc. So you have to hand draw much of the scene. If you make an overview drawling, there are a handful of graphics to place in your drawling. You can easily draw lines to represent the walls, then place a window or door in it. Windows, doors, furniture, etc. are pre made so you can place them in your drawling. But don't get too dependent on these graphics, because there are only a few items in each category. Remember, you can draw custom items with the tools. To better customize your pieces, there are many pattern to choose from. Even if you don't like the default patterns, you can make your own. The whole pattern system that the suite uses, are alike. The patterns are the same in many of the programs. This pattern system is nice, with about 60 default pattern, you should find something. Placing patterns on items are easy too. Just highlight the item, and then click on the pattern you want. Line patterns can almost be changed by repeating this process. All you do is select the line pattern box. Patterns play a large role in this program. So the simple pattern changing is helpful.

Architecture 3.01 is a program for people with high interests in building structure and layout. It also can create exterior looks and overview looks, but you need to put your work into it.

Based on the use of this program, I would give Architecture 3.01 an individual rating of 6/10.

Interiors 2.02

Interiors 2.02 is similar to Architecture 3.01. Interiors is used for overview drawings of specific rooms, or a whole area. A nice difference about Interiors is that you have the option of still 3D views. You can make an overview drawling and then look at it from north, south, east, and west sides. You can create floorplans and room layouts for houses, offices, etc.

The pre drawn objects that were in Architecture are different from the ones in Interiors. These are the objects that you can place into your drawings. Obviously, Interiors has interior items like appliances, doors, lights, room items, office items, etc. Again, the pattern system is the same as the one in Architecture. So when you make custom objects, you can easily make it look the way you want. The pictures to the side are only samples, excuse the colors. But it does show your choice of colors, patterns, and objects. The five available views are the overview, north, south, east, and west sides. The pictures to the side are presented only in the overview. The quality is lower because there is only still 3D views. The objects, like the chairs, are solid colors. There are no 3D textures. But the tables have patterns placed on them. This can help customize your rooms. You can also rotate and turn objects to make them fit where you want them. After placing items like a desk, you may place a phone or computer on top of it. The doors and windows can be placed in the wall. You still have the measurements of all items so you know how large you would like to make your rooms. Interiors is a very focused product that lets you experiment with designs and layout.

If you are interested in designing interiors of houses or other buildings, this program my be for you. This program will only focus on interior rooms. The detail of the drawings are not very high, but it provides you with the layout of rooms.

Based on the use of this program, I would give Interiors 2.02 an individual rating of 6/10.

Landscape 2.02

Like Interiors, Landscape also provides the five views. The overview, north, south, east, and west views are needed to really get a feel of a new landscape. Landscape will let you create a house and then place trees, shrubs, lawn ornaments, etc.

Landscape is a neat program for designing the way houses should look and feel. You start by sketching out the shape of the house. Then like Architecture and Interiors, you can place windows and doors. After you have the house complete, the lawn work begins. You might want to place trees or shrubs. If so, what kind, size, color, or age. The aging feature is quite handy. You simply change the age of the placed tree and the size changes in proportion with the age. The age can range from one to fifty or one hundred years. After you have placed all of your desired items, you can look at it from the four different side views. Overviews can be a bit plain, so the side views are greatly needed. These four views allow you to see the house and all trees, shrubs, etc. But it you draw a driveway in the overview mode, it will not appear in the side views. Only 3D objects will appear in side views. Since the house is a 3D object, you can control the size, height, color, etc. The same applies to the trees, shrubs, etc. Once again, you can customize all the objects to fit your needs or designs.

Landscape is a better program because of the five views and the simple control of the objects. If you design yards or other exterior landscapes, you may want to buy this program. It does make nice designs as output.

Based on the use of this program, I would give Landscape 2.02 an individual rating of 7/10.

Mighty Draw 1.1

Mighty Draw has many purposes in which it can be used. You could make greeting cards, draw charts, or other things. It is also simple to use and somewhat efficient.

Mighty Draw has a handful of drawling tools that make it simple to create nice looking products. For example, you can create angled lines, lines that are proportional, and type text anywhere on the screen. The text tool is easy to use. Just have the tool selected and click on your document. Then just start typing. Other features are included. If you want to make a card, you can select from many borders. Like many DYOH products, Mighty Draw has the ability to create various line types. You can draw lines that are different thickness, have arrows, and have labels. If you want to specify the length of an object, you can create a line that has arrows at both ends and has the length labels. It looks like a true architecture's symbol. When you create other lines, the angle and length automatically pop up and tell you what you are drawing. It even gets down to the 128th of an inch. That is quite detailed. These features are also included in other DYOH products, so they are all easy to use. Mighty Draw also has the same pattern system so you know exactly what to do. Simple line drawing and simple patterns help make these products efficient. You can also insert graphics to make greeting cards and help illustrate things. The other tools allow you to make different shapes. This way you can draw anything you want.

Mighty Draw is yet another similar program that focuses on creating greeting cards, charts, and other informational ideas for your new home or building. When this is added to the other programs, it makes them more complete. Mighty Draw is the general drawing program in the suite.

Based on the use of this program, I would give Mighty Draw 1.1 an individual rating of 6/10.

Design Estimator

The Design Estimator is a different program than the rest included in this suite. Microsoft helped make this program, so the interface is slightly different that the whole rest of Mac OS. But, Design Estimator is there to help you place a bid on your creations. If you finished building your house, you can now calculate the price of it.

Design Estimator is a very complex program that takes a while to learn. There is a detailed help section included with this program, so you can direct your questions there. To make a bid, you have to select all the items you want and then it calculates quantity, raw price, etc. You can also import your drawings and it will automatically list all of the items. It will import drawings from all of the DYOH series. You can also create your own items and place a price, description, item ID, etc. The item ID is important. This is how the items are different. The program uses the ID to calculate the cost.

To get the final word on Design Estimator, you need to try it. You need to see how it works and if it will fit your needs. It will probably work well for you if you have drawings that can be estimated. These can be CAD or DYOH documents. Just remember, you have to learn it all to take full advantage of these programs.

Based on the use of this program, I would give Design Estimator an individual rating of 7/10.

Final Conclusion

When you take these five programs and put them together in a package, it makes a complete home design kit. You can get the outside look and feel with Architecture, then specify each room with Interiors. Next use Landscape to plant trees, shrubs, etc. and look at it from different views. Mighty Draw can make housewarming items for you. Finally, place a number on your creations by using Design Estimator. Each and every item will have a price tag. This is what makes a complete home design suite. If you are interested in designing houses, offices, or other buildings, you could really use this package.
